Suvereto

Il paese dei mestieri

Suvereto is one of the most precious jewels of that treasure chest which is the Tuscan Maremma. Awarded the prestigious recognition of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Suvereto is nestled between the green hills and the shining sea of the Etruscan Coast, in the Val di Cornia. Within its ancient walls, this fabulous village holds treasures made of medieval streets, stone houses, evocative churches, historic buildings and particular museums. The village is surrounded by an endless valley of chestnut, oak and cork trees and it is the latter that give the town its name. Suvereto is a place rich in art and history, which stands out for its pleasant views of the Amiata mountains and fascinates those who visit it with its serene and relaxed air. Thanks to the flourishing countryside that surrounds it, Suvereto is also famous for the production of renowned wines. It is no coincidence that the famous Strada del Vino passes through these hills, a route that allows you to get to know, step by step, the places where this nectar of the gods acquires all its characteristics that have allowed it to conquer the title of DOC. Furthermore, Suvereto village is also known under the pseudonym of village of trades, precisely because of the close link it still has with its traditions. The artisan shops of Suvereto are rare pearls: here blacksmiths, carpenters, charcoal burners and straw weavers still carry on their art in a flourishing way, giving a romantic aspect to this marvelous town in the province of Livorno.

What to see

There are many palaces and churches to see in Suvereto, one of the most significant places in the city is the convent of San Francesco built in 1286 and played an important role in the life of the local community until it was closed in 1808 at the behest of Napoleon. Today, the splendid cloister formed by a loggia punctuated by round arches remains of this religious building converted into civil use. Next to it is the church of the Crucifix built in the sixteenth century to preserve the simulacrum of the patron saint. Also very interesting to visit is the parish church of San Giusto dating back to the 12th century and built to a design by Baron Amico and Bono da Calci. As for the secular structures, one of the most interesting to see is the Palazzo Comunale which dates back to the early thirteenth century and the Aldobrandesca fortress located at the highest point of the town. The latter is made up of three parts: the ruins of the ancient tower from 1164, four floors of houses with an attic and the remains of a wall. In the surroundings of Suvereto there is the Petra winery located in San Lorenzo alto. Whether you love good wine or not, this place deserves a visit just to admire its architecture created exclusively by Mario Botta.
