Grosseto
La capitale della Maremma Toscana
The beating heart of this ancient land which once took the name of Etruria is Grosseto, the provincial capital which dominates the Tuscan Maremma. A city between modernity and history, home to the main Maremma Archeology museum and economic and cultural center of the whole region.
Grosseto is a jewel between the impregnable walls immersed in the wild Maremma nature, one of the gems of Tuscany, less famous than the regal Florence, ancient Pisa and less talked about than the city of the Palio, Siena, despite this Grosseto is the standard-bearer of this incredible land , cradle of the Etruscan civilization, rich in spa resorts, paradisiacal beaches and lush mountains.
What to see
The Medici walls are the symbol of Grosseto, built in 1565 by the will of Cosimo dei Medici who wanted to transform the city tormented by malaria into a military stronghold. You can walk a large part of the walls starting from the keep and the bastion of the fortress located at the end of via Garibaldi.
The main street of Grosseto is Corso Carducci which ends in Piazza Dante where there are two of the most important buildings in the town: the cathedral of San Lorenzo which houses a rich religious heritage and the Palazzo della Provincia which you can only admire from the outside . At the center of the square is “il Canpone” or the statue erected in honor of Leopold II of Lorraine, the one who freed the Maremma from malaria.
The museums are also among the main attractions of Grosseto. The first in order of importance is the Maremma archaeological and art museum born in 1860. In the same building there is the museum of Sacred Art whose price is included in the ticket for the archaeological exhibition. The last of the city’s museums is the natural history one located in via Corsini 5.
In the surroundings of Grosseto there are other interesting attractions among which we suggest: the Etruscan archaeological sites of Roselle and the Maremma natural park, the largest and most famous nature reserve in the whole area.
